BOREALIS MARITIME CHOOSES A&P FALMOUTH

Monday 27th March 2017

Global ship repair, conversion and marine specialist A&P Group has completed a 13-day specialist maintenance programme for Borealis Maritime’s MOZART container ship at its Falmouth facility.

The 39,339 tonne, 2824 TEU container ship arrived in Falmouth earlier this month for its special survey docking period.  A&P Group’s programme of works included hull preparation and painting, minor shell steel renewals, electric motor overhauls and hatch steel and rubber seal repairs and renewals.

A&P also carried out a tail shaft seal modification to conform to global environmental pollution control regulations. The regulations govern discharges, emissions and losses of hazardous substances and member states are expected to take the necessary measures to achieve or maintain good environmental status in the marine environment by the year 2020.

The modification, installed by A&P Group, provides a pressurised air chamber between the outboard seawater seal and the inner oil seal. The chamber has a run off pipe that activates an alarm at the first sign of a leak, giving time for preventative action to be taken before any leakage into the sea. A&P Group completed the work under the guidance of Wärtsilä, the specialist seal provider.

Jez Littlejohns, Sales & Marketing Director for A&P Falmouth said: “This project called on our specialist project management and engineering expertise to expedite the project in the very tight timeframes. Despite these challenges the team delivered on time and to an exceptionally high standard and we are delighted by the positive feedback received from Wärtsilä about the tail shaft seal installation.   We very much look forward to building on this relationship with Borealis.”

Simon Smakowski, Managing Director from Borealis Maritime’s Germany office said: “A&P Group’s expertise and strong reputation, coupled with very competitive exchange rates, led to us appoint a UK facility for this project.  The team’s attention to detail and excellent project management skills ensured that the work was undertaken without delay and the vessel returned to service on time.”

A&P Group operates seven dry docks across three strategic locations in the UK and has a sister business in Australia that provides ship repair services and support to the Royal Australian Navy. All facilities combine a rich heritage of marine engineering skills and experience, providing ship owners and energy companies with the project management and precision skills needed to complete the most demanding projects.
