PROJECT REQUIREMENTS: Full fabrication and assembly of MWA structure, tether base and piles.
THE PROJECT: The project encompassed the fabrication and assembly of the structural mid water arch. Buoyancy tanks were fully fabricated and assembled in the A&P North East facility on the Tyne meeting the complete requirements of PD5500. The project included the shell, umbilical guide system, tether base and suction piles and resulted overall in approx. 600T of structure. Fabrication and assembly was concurrent with detailed engineering requiring close co-ordination between all parties involved in the project.
SCOPE OF WORK: With a six month build period and 50 men working on the project at peak the MWA system was delivered on time and to budget. Full load testing was carried out and the completed structures were fixed on a barge at one of three load-out locations at the Tyne facility. The MWA was then destined for the Athena Development in the UK North Sea sector.
THE RESULT: Following the departure of the Mid Water Arch from the fabrication yard in Hebburn on the Tyne, Project Director Iain Campbell said “The pressure vessel build was new to us and required very high standards of welding and subsequent integrity testing during the assembly and completion process. We also faced other challenges as the project progressed in this fast track project. NORSOK surface treatment systems will protect the structures over the design life of the system. It was a very exciting project, but everything came together and the whole project went extremely well.”
A&P North East Commercial Director, Neil Jarvis commented “Completing our second significant subsea project has given A&P North East a good entry point into this burgeoning subsea oil and gas market. We are already seeing enquiries for other types of subsea structure. We now have proven that a business such as ours can make the transition to completing highly complex, technically demanding projects safely and to the required quality meeting both time and cost targets consistently. We believe that this project has further enhanced our reputation and we will actively pursue projects in the oil and gas sector.”
