APCL A&P Falmouth’s Ground-breaking Shore Power Project Announced Overall Winner of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Sustainability Awards 2025.
APCL A&P Falmouth has been crowned the overall winner at the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Sustainability Awards 2025 and winner of the Low Carbon Leader Award in recognition of the completion of its £12 million shore power project, completed in early 2025, which has revolutionised emission reductions in port by offering sustainable shore power solutions to vessels. The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Sustainability Awards (CSA) has been running since 2002 and has become Cornwall’s leading initiative for rewarding and celebrating organisations for their contribution to sustainability. The initiative, named the Falmouth, Atlantic & Peninsula Clean Shore Power Future project, represents the largest investment in the facility in recent time, and has delivered the UK's first multi-vessel flexible shore power connections on Cornwall's Atlantic Peninsula. The project not only tackles CO2 emissions but also addresses noise pollution and local air quality in port areas. The programme was completed following APCL A&P Falmouth’s successful bid for funding from the UK Department for Transport’s Zero Emission Vessel Infrastructure Fund (ZEVI) in 2023, delivered with Innovate UK.A&P Falmouth's allocation of over £6 million of funding as part of ZEVI emphasises the government's commitment to real-world demonstration R&D projects in clean maritime solutions across the UK.The investment in shore power infrastructure has already (from April 2025 to October 2025) resulted in a significant reduction in local CO2 emissions. To date it has supplied 1,681,887 kwh of clean electricity through the project which is approx. 1,592 tonnes CO2 saving.Mike Spicer, Managing Director at APCL A&P Falmouth, said: “APCL A&P Falmouth and the wider APCL Group is absolutely delighted to have been awarded the Low Carbon Business Leader Award. We were especially thrilled to have been crowned the overall winner of the Cornwall Sustainability Awards 2025.“These hugely coveted awards recognise and reward key projects which offer significant contribution to environmental growth, circular economy and reducing carbon in the Cornwall. We are truly honoured to have secured both awards, which recognises the contribution APCL has made in tackling emissions and noise pollution in Falmouth."Sustainable shore power plays a vital role in global and national efforts to reduce the impact of the maritime industry on the environment, and the completion of these projects is a key part of APCL’s strategy is to achieve net zero across our operations by 2030”.Mike Spicer also extended APCL’s thanks to the Department for Transport, Innovate UK and project partner Integrum for the role they played in supporting the shore power programme. Mike said: “We would like to thank the Department for Transport, Innovate UK and the wider UK Government for supporting this milestone project. It is testament to the strength of our bid and our reputation in industry that we were chosen by UK Government to be recipients of this funding. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Department for Transport and Innovate UK over the years ahead as we develop a further understanding of the benefits delivered by this shore power funding. We also thank our civils project partner Integrum for their role in carrying out the HV upgrade to the facility which enabled the delivery of clean power to vessels alongside and in dry dock.”James Lovett, Innovation Lead for Future Maritime Technologies at Innovate UK said: “It’s fantastic to see APCL A&P Falmouth win these accolades for sustainability in Cornwall and the Isle of Scilly. This shore power project is a great example of how innovation can transform future industries and the team have done a great job delivering air quality improvements for Falmouth and the surrounding area. Congratulations and well done to the APCL A&P Falmouth team.”Justin Olosunde, Chair of the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Climate Commission, said: “Since their launch in 2002, the CSA has grown into the region’s leading celebration of sustainability, recognising excellence across all sectors. This year’s judging was especially challenging given the outstanding quality and impact of all the entrants. The overall winner award is chosen from all the winners of all the categories. The judges were inspired by A&P Falmouth’s Shore Power Project, which is pioneering the UK’s first scalable, multi‑vessel shore power system. They decided to award this project Overall Winner in recognition of its UK wide transformative potential and its reflection of Cornwall’s maritime past, present, and future.” APCL A&P Falmouth is also participating in a three-year study to measure the effectiveness of the shore power system in order to help expansion across other ports. Notes to Editors The ZEVI project is funded by UK Government through the UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE) programme in the Department for Transport.
