Tug Projects Delivered:  Fowey Tugs - Major Voith Unit Overhauls, Repairs and Seal Change on MORGAWR

The Project

For their successful operation tugs have to be highly manoeuvrable and able to change position and direction very quickly.  Voith Schneider (Voith) propulsion units are a very common propulsion type for tugs giving vessels efficient and fast manoeuvrability.

A&P Group’s Falmouth facility were contracted by Fowey Tugs to overhaul the two Voith units for their tug MORGAWR, a 30m long tug with a beam of 8m and gross tonnage of 223 tons.

A&P have extensive knowledge of Voith propulsion units having dry docked many tugs over the years, and having owned and operated their own port tugs, which incorporate these propulsion systems.

The Morgwar’s Voith units underwent an intermediate overhaul and seal change. This is performed by releasing each blade and lowering them from beneath the vessel to the dock bottom. The blades are then transported to A&P’s specialist machine shop for crack detection, calibration and any required machining. The new seals are installed during the blade refitting stage. On completion the units are filled with oil and tested to make sure the seals function correctly and do not leak.

A&P have conducted many such projects, which have also included complete removal of Voith units from vessels. This is achieved by cutting access holes in to the deck of vessels to allow entire units to be lifted out, taken away for complete overhaul or replacement and placed back into the vessel on completion. The access hole is then welded closed.

The Delivery

The project was delivered on time, on budget and to the exacting standards required by Fowey Tugs.  With a 20-strong A&P team working on the project, it was completed within ten days.

What Our Clients Say

“Many thanks to Peter Nimmo who managed our work package and to Matt Biggins who led the team that changed the seals on our port Voith unit. Both went above and beyond the already professional approach and execution shown by the other A&P employees working on MORGAWR.” Gary Rawlings Vessel Superintendent Fowey Tugs
